SOUTH CENTRAL SALEM

South Central Salem is one of the most beautiful and historic areas of Salem. South Central Salem includes the Gaiety Hill/Bush's Pasture Park Historic District, one of only four National Register Historic Districts in the city and the first to be established in 1986. Bush's Pasture Park is one of the largest and most popular parks in Salem, home of the annual Salem Art Fair and Festival. There are two house museums in SCAN: the Bush House and Deepwood, along with Gaiety Hollow, the historic home and garden of pioneering landscape architects Elizabeth Lord and Edith Schryver. Pringle Creek winds its way though South Central Salem on its way to the Willamette River. The lovely Fairmount Hill neighborhood is the location of Mahonia Hall, the Oregon Governor's residence. South Central Salem has many historic houses — too many to list here. But the SHINE on Salem website presents a good tour of many of the homes in the Gaiety Hill/Bush's Pasture Park Historic District. SCAN works hard to preserve the beauty and character and historic significance of South Central Salem.
